In the fall of 1967, the first Road Runners left the assembly lines. They were based on the new B-body models and were thus sister models to the Plymouth Belvedere, the Plymouth Satellite and the equally sporty but better equipped and more expensive Plymouth GTX. After the Road Runner was initially only available as a B-pillar coupe, the hardtop coupe (without B-pillar) was introduced some time later. However, individual seats were not yet available, nor was a convertible version.

In 1969, the cartoon characters Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote were shown in color. In this year, the coupe and hardtop coupe were joined by the convertible. The latter remained a rarity with just under 2000 examples. Engines were the same as the previous year, i.e. one standard, the 383cui (6.3-liter) Hi Performance and as an option the 426cui Hemi (7-liter) with 425 HP. As a special package in the mid 1969s there was the A12 package which included a 440 Six Pack (7.2-liter) with three twin carburetors that produced 390HP. Motor Trend magazine found this car so compelling that it awarded the Road Runner "Car of the year" in 1969.

A real original Hollywood starlet

In 1968 in Los Angeles this beautiful 2-door hardtop coupe saw the light of day and was driven there until 2007. Due to the above average sunny and dry climate of this state, the body condition is exceptional. Exceptional is also the preservation of the original condition after all these years.
Muscle cars in particular are vehicles that were usually worked hard by their owners and also burned up in later years for racing or fun on the road. This results in many cases in intensive conversions of the technology, the optics and the functionality, all of which were not done here. On the contrary, here we have a real unmodified plain vanilla Road Runner. Only one of the last (German) previous owners gave it the best manifolds available on the market.

A tour: Under the hood, the 383cui V8 big block in high performance trim shines with its 330+ horsepower. These result from the following compared to the 383cui:

  • 4-fold intake manifold
  • 4-fold carburetor
  • extra large dual snorkle air filter
  • sharper camshaft
  • firmer valve springs
  • Pistons that produce a higher compression ratio
  • 2 flooded exhaust system and Hi Flow exhaust manifolds (which have been replaced here by even better, chrome-plated fan manifolds)

Often the Mopars in Europe are converted to an electronic ignition system and the original sheet metal valve covers are replaced by aluminum valve covers, but not with this one!
There is a true to original overhauled contact distributor installed and the original orange sheet metal valve covers are still in their original place.
For a cosmetic fix, we installed new heater hoses with correct vintage labeling, reusing the factory hose clamps. We also replaced the universal flex hose at the top of the water cooler with a matching original pre-molded hose. The engine runs clean and powerful on all cylinders, there is no imbalance. For safety, we checked the oil pressure with a manual gauge, it is a whopping 58psi at idle when cold.

  • The engine is "matching numbers": this means that it is exactly the engine that was assembled at the factory when the vehicle was assembled.
  • The transmission is "date correct": the year of manufacture of the transmission matches that of the vehicle. However, the transmission is a heavy duty transmission from a 69 Coronet R/T.
  • We have checked the body ("body stamp numbers") and can confirm that it is a genuine Road Runner.

The only modernizations were a light relief circuit via a relay invisibly installed under the battery plate and converted to H4 main headlights, for German road approval.
As it belongs to a real muscle car, no unnecessary bells and whistles like air conditioning, power steering, 3-speed wiper motor or brake booster were installed in this Road Runner.
If you think you have to step on the brake pedal hard, you've never tested Mopar's 11" x 3" and rear 11" x 2.5" drum brakes.
They have an extremely large contact area and drum brakes also generally require only a fraction of the hydraulic pressure that disc brakes do.

Let's look under the Road Runner, there is the heavy duty (heavy duty) automatic transmission, a full, like-new 2.5" TTI exhaust system with X-pipe, Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, and an 8 ¾" rear axle with a 3.23 ratio installed. Additionally, a thread was put in the oil pan so it would now be easy to retrofit an oil temperature gauge.
As a preventative measure, the underbody was waxed and sealed in Germany so that it will remain rust-free for the future. All four frame members are straight and accident free.
There is also no rust through showing in any of the frame areas. All of the sheet metal is still original, this includes the trunk floor and rear end tips. Only the front left fender seems to have been replaced with another used one. The front axle has new rubber bushings and many parts have been repainted. In the rear, new Mopar Performance XHD leaf springs have been mounted along with new rubber bushings, plus front and rear mild (not too tight) Koni shocks. This muscle car is supported by original Magnum wheels and Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires in size 235-60 R14. Thanks to the unlocked differential, the rear end does not break away directly when the throttle is pushed too hard in a corner.

Impressive is not only the Frost Green Metallic paint with the dark green full vinyl roof framed by roof trim and the other chrome parts. But also that the color scheme can be found throughout the interior of the luxury trim level. The renewed vinyl seats, covered original door panels and carpet are color-matched in light and dark green metallic. The entire well-maintained interior is in exceptionally good condition. Even the dashboard is in perfect condition, here a Bosch tachometer was also retrofitted.

NOSTALGY MEETS HIGHTECH - Historic Car Radio with Digital Functions

From the factory, the standard solid state AM (2 watt) radio is mounted and this masterpiece of design remains in this car. Here the most expensive offered version of the conversion was done by Aurora Design in OEM quality. Now all radio stations can be reached with DAB/DAB+, the smartphone is charged with USB connection, the own playlists can be played and phone calls can be made with integrated Bluetooth - and all this is fully integrated in the vintage car radio.
All the changes of the conversion were made only inside the radio. There are no additional connection cables so as hidden technology in the glove compartment. Only the interior of the car radio is equipped with new components. The housing, all buttons, switches and controls still retain all their original functions. Only the USB input is hidden under the dashboard. Matching this exclusive highlight are the qualitative after market music boxes.
These are hidden under the new parcel shelf in green original look and produce a decent good sound.

The Road Runner already has the status of a historic vehicle in Germany, so for our German customers this means that they can register and drive the car directly and without any problems after the purchase. In addition, the original US Title and a thick folder of other documents and invoices are available.
