sold!

Here we offer you a 1972 Road Runner GTX with the infamous 440 cui V8 engine and a 3-speed 727 automatic transmission. The last owner had the car in his possession for over 20 years. During that time, he first started with repairs and transitioned into an intensive full restoration. He placed a very high value on originality, even with the small and large parts. This car was restored to correct factory condition. As a true "Petty Blue" car with white interior and white vinyl top, this car is even rarer than it already was due to the 440cui HP engine. Only 672 units with 440cui HP engine were built and may boast the GTX designation.

From 1972, the GTX was no longer available as a separate model. Instead there was for the Roadrunner, which was offered until 1971 only with 340 or 383, from 1972 the GTX option with which he then got a 440Hi Performence engine with a 4-fold carburetor. The 440 was previously reserved only for the GTX in most years of manufacture. From the outside, the 1972 GTX variant can be identified by three GTX emblems. One on the trunk lid and one on each fender between the wheel arch and the door.

Famous-notorious muscle car with lush equipment

The 440 engine (4 barrel high performance V8) on this Road Runner was completely overhauled by the previous owner and has only run a few thousand miles since. Unfortunately, his engine builder installed a defect. We will remove the engine and repair it professionally.  We will make sure that the engine is built like a 1968-69 High Performance engine. After the rebuild it will have either more or 375HP. You would get a uniquely styled 1972 Road Runner GTX, which is just as much fun as the earlier muscle cars with 440HP engine. Also installed is a 26" radiator and an electronic ignition system. Almost all wiring harnesses, all brake lines, fuel line, gaskets and interior have been replaced.
Installed is an 8 ¾ rear axle, front disc brakes with standard 10" RR drum / rear drum brakes and a brake booster.

The body was stripped of paint, restored where necessary, so it is now in rust-free, immaculate condition. Not a millimeter was omitted from the paint job. Even the underbody is completely painted in body color. This results in a sporty overall concept due to the new blue "Basin Street Blue" paint, the new white vinyl roof, the black stripes from the hood to the fenders and the black spoilers.
All windows are tinted, two Race Style exterior mirrors in body color and additional turn signal indicators on the hood are installed and were from the factory.

All chrome parts are newly chrome plated and shine like a mirror! Also new are seat covers on the front bucket seats and rear bench seat, door panels, carpet and headliner.
Framing the black dash is a woodgrain console. Recessed in this are the gauges, an AM/FM ratio with cassette and, as a small eye-catcher, the Road Runner head with lettering above the glove box. The wood grain is also repeated on the new interior door panels.

Also new are the leaf springs, fuel tank, brakes, new tires, new front suspension... Extensive documentation on these is available. To list them here would go beyond the scope, as new parts were purchased for this project for about over 30,000€.

Another interesting documentation is the broadcast sheet, this is the assembly instructions that came with the car on the factory line in 1972. All options are listed here along with the chassis number. So it is the documented assembly instructions for the car. And through this, the originality of this unique '72 Plymouth Road Runner (GTX) is verifiable.
All in all it is unique and make this car one of a kind!
Police controls, no problem! Whether Soko or appraiser, at this (from their point of view "wild) vehicle they will search for hours without success for a modification!

TüV and H-registration are optionally available.
Of course with correctly registered engine power. All engines that were in the body from the factory are approved.

The car is in our showroom in 59399 Olfen, Schloßerstrasse 10 and can be visited by appointment.

Mopars, Richard Petty & the Racing- Little Side Jump

The 1971-72 Road Runner was used by several NASCAR race teams for their race cars and ran well on the track during the 1971-74 seasons. Richard Petty, a very famous US NASCAR racer, won the championship in both 1971 and 1972 with the Road Runner-based cars, winning 30 races in both seasons.
The Petty family has risen to become one of the most powerful NASCAR families in the US. The "Petty Blue" color became an important part of their trademark. They came up with the idea one night before a race when they had a car that needed a new paint job.

You would think that deciding on something so important to racing would be a complicated process. Certainly, the Pettys thought about it for some time before finally finding the right color,
but the origin was rather random.
Perhaps these kinds of coincidences make for the best stories.
Instead of a long back and forth between colors, the colors were mixed together on that fateful night before a race. When the boys only had some white and blue paint lying around, they decided to mix them together. As it turned out, they didn't have enough of either color left to paint the entire car. From then on, the rest was history. With such an iconic racing family, they probably could have made the colors of a baby diaper look good. Still, it's pretty interesting to learn that an iconic color was basically created quite by accident in a pinch.
