This single-groove steel road valve lock, made of hardened steel, with a closing angle of 7° and a valve stem size of 11/32 in., is a perfect replacement valve lock for overhauling production engines. It is recommended only for street applications with lighter valve spring loads. It is crucial that the valve locks match the valve size. There should always be a small gap between the two halves of the lock when they are properly positioned on the valve stem. If the two halves fit together without a gap, they are too large. If the locks fit tightly on the stem and leave a gap between the center of the lock and the outer diameter of the stem, the locks are too small.
Most people believe that the pin inside a valve lock holds the valve disc and valve spring in place while the engine is running. However, this is not the case. The cross-sectional area of the driver is not strong enough to withstand an open spring load of 1,000 lbs. or more. The sole purpose of the driver is to temporarily secure the lock, the retainer, and the spring relative to the valve until the retainer’s cone can wrap around the outer surface of the lock. This creates a “collet” effect that holds the two parts together. The more spring force is applied to the retainer (as the valve opens), the more force is exerted by the “collet” effect to hold the retainer and the lock in place.
